Which visitor attractions are located near the hotel? The area around the Sputnik Hotel was mostly developed in the 1950s and 1960s, and has some fine examples of Stalinist neoclassical architecture. Ploshchad Gagarina, the square around Leninskiy Prospekt Metro Station, is particularly impressive, and is crowned by a soaring titanium statue of Yurii Gagarin. It was at this site that he met hoards of admirers as he returned to Moscow from his historic orbit of the earth in 1961.
About 1km from the hotel, the historic Neskuchniy Sad was once an aristocratic estate, but now forms the wilder and more picturesque southern section of Gorky Park, or the Central Park of Culture and Leisure in the Name of Maxim Gorky, to give it its full name. It's a pleasant place to stroll, especially in the summer.
A little further afield, the Donskoy Monastery dates back to the 16th century, and was one of a ring of fortified monasteries that acted as the first line of defense for Moscow in the Middle Ages. Almost completely restored to its former glories, the monastery contains several beautiful churches and a famous cemetery. |
