Bega Hotel

There is not much in the way of attractions in the immediate area of the Bega Hotel except for the Central Moscow Hippodrome, which the hotel was originally built to serve.

Founded in 1834, the Hippodrome is easily Russia's top racetrack. The track is home to the Russian Derby which has been run since 1886. This says nothing for the quality of racing which, although slowly improving as equestrian sports become more popular with rich Russians, is still considered sub-par by Western European standards. The buildings, however, which date from the late 19th century and the 1930s, include superb examples of early Stalinist neoclassicism, and guests sitting on the higher floors of the hotel are offered great views of them and of the horses exercising in the mornings.

A more modern sporting attraction is the Dynamo Stadium. At about 20 minutes from the hotel, the stadium is home to Dynamo FC, the Premier League club founded in 1923 by Felix Dzerzhinsky, head of the Cheka (the KGB’s forerunner). Built in 1928, the stadium also hosts other sporting events and the occasional concert.
