Marco Polo Presnja Hotel

The Marco Polo Presnja Hotel is located just 3 km from the city center in a quarter notable for its pleasant leafy back streets and literary associations. The Patriarch's Ponds, now a single pond encircled by railings and set in a tree-lined square, is just a 5-minute walk from the hotel and is known throughout Moscow as the setting for the opening chapter of Mikhail Bulgakov's satirical fantasy The Master and Margarita.

Mostly inhabited by students before the revolution, this bohemian area surrounding the hotel soon became known as Moscow's Latin Quarter and many of Russia's most celebrated writers and artists made the district their home. Within a few blocks of the hotel guests will find the Anton Chekhov House-Museum, devoted to the prolific 19th century playwright and short story writer, and the neo-Gothic facade of the Morozov Mansion, designed by the turn-of-the-century architect Shekhtel and home to the Morozov textiles merchants, sponsors of the Moscow Art Theatre and Lenin's newspaper Iskra.

Another short walk away is the Maxim Gorky House-Museum, which celebrates the life and literary works of the Soviet novelist and champion of Socialist Realism. While the museum has limited appeal, the Ryabushinsky Mansion in which it is housed, assigned to Gorky by the Soviet authorities, is a decadent masterpiece of Style Moderne architecture with a particularly impressive marble staircase.

Guests at the Marco Polo Presnja can also enjoy an evening concert performance by the Moscow Symphony Orchestra at the local Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, located a 10-minute walk away.
