Although the Historical Hotel Sovietsky does not have the best location, and lacks some of the comforts of a modern chain hotel, it is one of the most distinctively Russian hotels in Moscow, and likely to appeal to travellers who want a taste of local culture and history more than bland convenience. In addition to the Historical Sovietsky Hotel's elegant and grandiose interiors, guests will be pleasantly surprised to find that it offers reasonably priced 4-star accommodation in Moscow.

Built on Stalin's orders in 1952 in a sumptuous "Soviet Empire Style", and then completely renovated in 1997, the Sovietsky boasts marble-column lined halls, crystal chandeliers, high ceilings and beautifully wood-paneled guest rooms. The hotel houses the famous Yar Gypsy Restaurant, originally founded on the site in 1826 and rebuilt before the Revolution, which still offers authentic folk performances and traditional Russian and European cuisine in a welcoming turn of the century atmosphere.

Renowned for many years as the official hotel of the Soviet government, the Sovietsky played host to many top foreign officials and international diplomats and today it successfully combines nostalgic elegance, a traditional Russian atmosphere and modern conveniences that for business or leisure travelers. Situated in a residential district in the north of Moscow, the Sovietsky lies almost 5 km from the Kremlin, but is reasonably well-served by public transport. The city's central tourist attractions, including the Kremlin, Red Square and the Bolshoi Theatre, can be reached by metro from the nearby Dinamo Metro Station in little over 20 minutes.
