D' Hotel

There are several sights of interest near the D'Hotel. The All-Russian Exhibition Centre (VVTs/VDNKh), which now hosts a variety of trade fairs and exhibitions, was founded in the 1930s as a place to display the progress of Soviet farming and later manufacturing. With its formal gardens and rows of stylized pavilions, mostly dating from the 1930s and 1950s, it is one of the finest places in Moscow to appreciate Stalinist architecture, and is also home to Vera Mukhina's celebrated monumental sculpture of Worker and Collective-Farm Girl. Also in the park is the Space Obelisk, an impressive monument which houses the Memorial Museum of Cosmonautics, charting the Soviet Union's role in the space race.

A short walk to the north-west of VVTs will bring visitors to Ostankino Park and Palace, once the home of the prominent Counts Sheremetyev, and the third-largest wooden building in the world. Famous for its serf theatre, the palace now operates as a museum housing large collections of antique furniture and applied art. The northern part of Ostankino Park was transformed in the late 1930s into the Main Botanical Garden of the Russian Academy of Science. Meanwhile, just south of the Ostankino Ponds is Moscow's impressive TV tower, the tallest free-standing structure in Europe.
