Best Western Vega Hotel & Convention Center

While it is necessary to take the metro to explore most of Moscow's major attractions from the Best Western Vega Hotel, guests should not miss the delights of Izmailovsky Park, which surrounds the Izmailovo hotel complex. Dating back to the 14th century, the park was developed under Alexei Mikhailovich, son of the first Romanov Tsar, as a model village which was used for experiments in agriculture and as a retreat for the Tsar's family. Peter the Great spent much of his childhood at Izmailovo, boating on the lakes and playing war games in the park's ample grounds and forest.

Among the most interesting sights that have survived to this day are the glorious Pokrovskiy Cathedral on Silver Island, and the complex of buildings that surrounds it, most of which were designed by the famous Moscow classicist Konstantin Ton.

The park is the ideal place for strolling in summer, and the Izmailovsky Souvenir Market, which is held in a wooden fenced enclosure near the metro station every Saturday and Sunday, is on of the best places in Moscow to pick up reasonably priced gifts, including nesting dolls and hand-painted wooden bowls and spoons.
