Baltschug Kempinski Hotel

The Baltschug Kempinski Hotel is located across the Moskva River from Moscow's most famous and popular downtown attractions - Red Square and the Kremlin - both of which can be reached in around 15 minutes on foot. To the south of the hotel, the Zamoskvorechye district is a historic area of the city that was once home to Moscow's wealthy merchant class, and is famous for its many old churches and for the State Tretyakov Gallery, the superb collection of national art that can be reached from the Baltschug Kempinski Hotel in around ten minutes on foot.

In the immediate vicinity of the hotel, the most striking building is the Sofievskaya Bell Tower, about 400 m west along the embankment. Part of the Church of St. Sophia in Srednye Sadovniki, this magnificent Russian Revival structure is painted a distinctive pale mauve color, and was completed in 1868 on the site of a wooden church dating back to the 15th century.

Just behind the Baltschug Kempinski, the Church of St. George is a beautiful 17th century church in traditional Muscovite style, with a rich history and its own pretty bell tower from the 19th century. Next to the hotel, the Bolshoy Moskvoretskiy Bridge, which crosses the river to the southern end of Red Square, is unremarkable in itself, but is a popular spot for photographing St. Basil's Cathedral and the Kremlin and is also notable as the place where 18-year-old German aviator Matthias Rust landed his Cessna 172 to international bemusement in May, 1987.
