The Marriott Tverskaya Hotel stands on Tverskaya Street, one of the central arteries running out of the city center. Originally, as its name would suggest, the road ran only as far as the old town of Tver, some 170 km to the north-west of Moscow, but was later extended onto the old religious capital of Novgorod, and after 1713 on to Peter The Great's city on the banks of the River Neva. From the 17th century onwards the street became Moscow's main thoroughfare, growing increasingly commercial and was the first street in the city to be lit by lampposts. Today Tverskaya boasts a plethora of boutiques and salons for Moscow's nouveaux riches and a number of notable landmarks.
The Marriott is situated just a few minutes walk from Mayakovskaya Metro Station, dedicated to the Futurist poet and enthusiastic supporter of the Bolsheviks, Vladimir Mayakovsky. Built in 1938, the station lies just a few steps from the former Mayakovsky Square, which centers round an impressively rugged statue of the Soviet hero, whose tragic suicide in 1930 prompted Stalin to exalt him as the most talented poet of the Soviet epoch. Nestled between the square, now named Truimphalnaya Square, guests can find the imposing pillared facade of the Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, home to Russia's State Symphony Orchestra.
The Marriott is just two metro stops or a 5 to 10 minute drive from the very heart of Moscow and the city's famous Kremlin. Originally founded in the 12th century as a wooden fort on a hill high above the confluence of the Moscow and Neglina Rivers, the Kremlin settlement gradually developed and around it sprang up the city of Moscow. Traditionally the seat of Russian political power, except for a 200-year stretch when Peter The Great chose to move the capital to his newly founded city of St. Petersburg, The Kremlin hosted some of Russia's most notorious Tsars and political figures. Today, visitors to The Kremlin complex can admire the Senate building, the official residence of the President of the Russian Federation, the Great Kremlin Palaces, the five Kremlin cathedrals housing the tombs of many of Russia's tsars and the State Armory, home to an extensive collection of priceless artifacts from throughout the history of the Russian Imperial State.
The Kremlin stands on the vast cobbled expanse of Red Square, famed as the site of numerous Bolshevik demonstrations, Soviet parades and now occasional pop concerts. In the vicinity of the square, guests can enjoy a pleasant stroll round the elegant foreign boutiques of the GUM shopping mall, explore the dark tunnels and coves of the brightly-painted St. Basil's cathedral, peruse the exhibits in the capital's Historical Museum or file past the body of the founder of the Soviet State, Lenin, still preserved and on public display some 76 years after his death.
Just a 5-minute walk from Red Square and no more than a 20-minute journey from the Marriott Tverskaya Hotel, lies the Bolshoi Theatre, the gem of Moscow's performing arts scene and home to the magnificent Bolshoy Ballet. Whilst in Moscow, whether for business or leisure, visitors should not miss the opportunity to see a performance by one of the most famous ballet companies in the world.
The hotel is just 30 kilometers or a hour's drive from Moscow's International Sheremet'evo Airport. |
